I'm back again and I have to get something off my chest..
I'm a black guy. As far as stereotypes go for black guys, I fit a few but I'm not your typical 'Boyz in the Hood' type of negro. Ok, I like fried chicken (and watermelon but who doesn't?). I like rap music and I used to wear Fubu and Rocawear when it was cool. However on the gangster scale I'm probably like a 4.5 out of 10 and I'm proud of it. I never had dreds or cornrows (thats a whole other blog in itself). I've never been to jail, unless you count timeout at christian camp, and I've spent more time at bible study than on the block hustlin'. I don't beat girls, unless it's in a pillow fight, and the only tattoo I ever had I won from Chuck E. Cheesse because I had 20 tickets (happy belated birthday stew).
Why are people (white and asian girls) so scared of me at night?
I feel like Shrek when he met donkey...
I was walking to my car after work at around 9:30p.m. and I see a white girl about 20ft ahead of me walking in the same direction in the parking lot. I work at the mall and at 9:30 on a friday night at Annapolis Mall the parking lot is pretty well lit. So I wasn't really worried about getting robbed, raped or a combination of the two; but apparently she was. After about six seconds she realizes I'm walking in the same direction as her and she starts to noticeably change her pace. I'm still not far behind her and I guess she realizes this, so her brisk walk quickly turns into an all out dash to her car. She runs to the car door, opens it as fast as she can, and starts locking all the doors (her whip was a lil ghetto, she ain't have automatic locks).
At this point I'm right in front of her car and I can see her heart is beating harder than a drum in Africa because she thinks I walked all this way to rob her broke self. I smile and then unlock the door to my car which is right next to hers; she feels pretty dumb when she realizes that I was parked right next to her. While she sits in the car trying to calm her breathing,, I put the key in the ignition and drive away.
I don't think this girl was racist. She just saw a black guy at night and her instinct's told her to...run. Can I blame her for trying to do what she thought was best to survive? No. 'Cause honestly when I see a group of black guys I get a little worried myself (mom should've enrolled me in that Karate class). So who is to blame here? Well we can start with the media. Thier exhaustive coverage on the country's 'war on crime' completely warps the nation's view of black men in America. I know, I know we have a black president with black kids and a black wife. However, that dosen't erase the fact that the only movies released by major production companies overwhelmingly feature black guys as criminals. It dosen't change the fact that police brutality is on the rise in heavily populated urban areas and it's going unpunished. As a black man I have a better chance of going to jail for 4 years than going to college for 4 years. So when more police forces are implemented I start to feel unsafe. Not because I have anything to hide or any crimes that I want to keep from police, but because of the vigilante justice that seems ever so popular with the nation's police forces today. Don't believe me? Just ask Ronnie White or Trey Joyner what I mean. Oh wait, you can't because the Prince George's County police killed them already.
I don't mean to go on a rant or anything like that but when the girl ran from me it just got me thinking. If your that girl who ran from me and your reading this right now, maybe we can do lunch- I know a great sushi place.
