He called him a nigger with an ER...and I didnt slap him, Malcom X would be ashamed.
I told you before that I work at the mall but I didn’t tell you where because you don’t need to know. I will tell you I work a dead-end job selling shoes to bratty little girls and fat people who think the shoes will make them more fit (lucky for me I’m in college). I don’t hate my job, honestly I’m lucky to be employed in this global recession, I just get really bored and I’ve realized that retail is not for me. I’ve been working there such a short time I haven’t even got a paycheck yet but I’ve been looking for a reason to quit. Well I went into work yesterday and they messed up and gave a nigga a reason to quit. Wait did I just say nigga? You’re gonna like this story…
I come into work Thursday morning at 8 to help put away the shipment and I find out that the manager that usually does it with me isn’t coming in and I’m working with (for the sake of privacy lets call him Gill). Gill is a 25 year old gay white guy who makes Ryan Seacrest look like Arnold Schwarzenegger. He is always complaining about something or confronting you with his sarcastic attitude. It took some getting used to at first, but after a while I was cool with his personality because I'm a people-person and I naturally get along with almost everyone (but seriously I do). I'm not homophobic at all, in fact I have gay friends, so don't think for one second that this blog is anti-gay or something (I do hate the musical RENT tho). Anyway, Gill doesn't do shipment often so he's a little confused on how the process works even though its extremely simple. Basically a trucker drops off some boxes to us and we give him a paper to sign...thats it. Well the trucker, who was on a tight schedule, did his job and delivered the boxes to us and was waiting for Gill to make sure we had the right amount and sign off on the paper. Gill counts the boxes three times and gets a number of 26 but there is supposed to be 28. I count the boxes and get 29, and then we count them again together and finally get 28. The trucker is pisssed at this point because he has places to go, and usually it doesn't take the other manager this long to count some boxes. So the trucker, who is a Bill Cosby looking black guy in his late 40's, asks Gill "Did you even know there was 28 boxes?" Gill who I'm sure had no clue how many boxes there were said in a sarcastic voice "I knew there was either 26 or 28." The trucker signs the paper and then leaves.
The door shuts. "Fucking NIGGER Bitch" said Gill. That's right, Gill a 145pound gay white guy called this trucker a nigger as soon as he walked out the door. At the time, I wasn't sure if I had heard him correctly because you don't expect to hear people just say nigger that boldly right in-front of you. I couldn't believe it, my heart sank. Did my boss just call a random guy who wasn't even acting like a nigger, a nigger? I could understand if a black guy came in the store robbed the register and then ran out with all the money...that's definitely a situation where I would understand if a white guy said nigger (see I'm a reasonable guy). But if someone is just doing their job, and they confront you when your not doing yours don't call them a nigger, especially not in front of a black person. So I was faced with some options A) kick this dudes butt and make him pay for what he said B) ask him about it C) go get the trucker and have him kick his butt.
Since I'm broke and the other options would cause your boy porterpotty to loose his job (and possibly get arrested) I choose B, ask him about it. So I did. About 10 seconds after he said it, I asked him "did you just call that guy a nigger?" "No" Gill said. "I don't know if you knew but I'm gay and I know how it feels to be discriminated against so I would never do that to another person," said Gill. You see Gil was mistaken. He confused discrimination with racism. Discrimination is the denial of an opportunity to an individual because of race, age, sex, or sexual orientation. But Gill was just being racist. I told him that just because your gay and you prefer a carrot to a hot dog bun (didnt actually say that analogy) doesn't mean you can't be racist against black people. I told him there a gay who hate other gays because they act to flamboyant, there are blacks who hate other black because they act too "ghetto" and there are whites who despise other whites because they think they're white trash. So just because your gay doesn't make you not a racist, that was the dumbest excuse for saying nigger I ever heard. I should have slapped him for that comment but I didn't. Then he responded with this old cliche talk about how he just bought a Nas album and rap music and BET make the word so popular that you have to say it to get it out of your system. That's wack. First of all, I know this guy doesn't listen to rap at all. He listens to Celine Dion non-stop, he even told me before that he spent his rent money on first row seats to her show. And you want me to believe rap is why you said nigger?
What If this situation was the opposite. What if a feminine-acting male customer comes in the store and drops his ice-cream on the floor then doesn't clean it up, and switches his way on out the door. What if I get pissed, go in the back room and say "uhh that faggot was so annoying." I'll tell you what would happen. I would've been fired labeled a homophobic and it would cause all these problems. And If I did say that I would be completely wrong and would deserve every bit of punishment that came my way. It's for that reason that I was very careful about what I said around Gill, making sure I didn't offend him out of respect. Apparently he couldn't go out of his way enough just to make sure he didn't say nigger when I'm in the room. Needless to say th rest of my shift was very awkward because I didn't wanna look at this guy at all. However, he started being so nice to me, giving me breaks at random times and basically doing my job. But did he think I was stupid and couldn't see that obviously he's tryna make sure I don't call Jesse Jackson? Haha too late..
aw yay ! :) i like this david !

Wow, sounds like you had an interesting day. Situations like the one you were in really bother me. It's a shame that people today cannot live their lives without racial slurs and stereotypes. I think you did the right thing though, at least, that's what I would've done.
