How football players can really change the game.

SO I was watching the movie 'The Express' yesterday. It's a touching sports movie about Ernie Davis the first black man to win the Heisman Trophy. I guess you could think of him as the Jackie Robinson of football. The movie has that 'Remember the Titans' sort of feel that makes you want to call up your white friends and invite them fishing. This blog isn't a movie review, however the movie got me to thinking, and whether my thoughts were original are not thats what I wrote about...

People always accuse my generation (generation X) of being lazy, unappreciative, and brainwashed. And we always defend ourselves by saying we're the generation that created the internet, perfected the cellphone and elected the first black president. Both are interesting arguments but I think the old timers that say we never fight for anything or work hard have a compelling point. I can't imagine participating in protests that would end with vicious police dogs and water hoses on full blast. I can't imagine walking alongside the leaders of a movement like MLK or Malcom X. In fact, since the legends of the civil rights movement the black community hasn't had any memorable leaders. My peers will be quick to name a couple of rappers that inspire black people to "stay on they hustle" but I believe that's why we as a people haven't advanced since the '60s. Sure there are plenty of black actors, doctors, lawyers, and college graduates but those are individual accomplishments. As a community things aren't going to well; AIDS and HIV are infesting our women, the black-white test score gap is at an all-time high, and the only thing dying faster than black men is the black family. (I really hate being the barer of bad news)
So how do we solve this? You cant tackle it all in one day, but you have to start somewhere and why not start where blacks are the best at...football.

You may be thinking, "football? why football?" and your right our emphasis on success through sports has curtailed our potential for success in the classroom but hear me out. I'm sure it's no surprise to you that 46.1% of college football players are black. The other 54.9 is a bunch of other races or mixed people. So blacks make up basically half of college football but there are only 4 black head coaches out of 119 teams? That don't even sound right. Where dey do dat at? America the land of the free and equal opportunity. It honestly doesn't make logical sense. Blacks make up most of college football and the NFL so it's not far fetched to say that blacks are some of the best football players. If we can teach ourselves to play it and we can teach our sons to play it, why won't the NCAA hire more black coaches? It's puzzling. I must say there are a few myths out there "explaining" why black coaches don't get hired. One of them is the Schmooze factor . This is the belief among college presidents and athletic directors that black head coaches can't charm the alums and the predominantly white media, raise the money for new facilities and, otherwise, make boosters comfortable. However, this isn't true, Barack Obama who I think is a black guy, raised millions of dollars in his campaign for the presidency- a race which is basically to see who can raise the most money and who the media is most fond of.
Obviously the Schmooze factor is incorrect.
Another myth is the Lure of the NFL. This is the belief that all the good black college coaches take their talent straight to the NFL and the big bucks and don't waste their time trying to coach college. That is just completely unbelievable. I know plenty of black dudes that need a job. Why would they pass up a great job like being a college coach? And contrary to popular belief thousands of great college football players graduate every year but don't go to the NFL. They could/should become a protege of a coach or an offensive/defensive coordinator so one day they could get paid to hold the big whistle, but it hardly happens.
This isn't a knock against white coaches, I know plenty of white men that know the game like the back of their hands, all I'm saying is if race doesn't matter when it comes to playing the sport why does it matter for coaches? I go to the University of Maryland and when our football team walks into the diner it looks like a free Gucci Mane concert just let out. So wouldn't it make more since to have a coach who knows who Gucci Mane is instead of one who listens to Kenny G? Even the white guys on the team act/talk black (yall kno wat i mean) so I'm sure they wouldn't have problems with a black coach.
So while I was watching the movie it came to me, the black community can finally kill two birds (or 2 dogs in Michael Vick's case) with one stone. We can have black coaches and create unity between our people like during the civil rights era. How can we do this? Boycott college football. If black players make up nearly have of college football imagine if on the first week of the season they all said "We're not playing a game this season until the NCAA vows to put more coaches that look like me in this league." Its called a strike. The NBA had one before where the players stopped playing until they received better benefits from the owners. The NHL recently had one for the exact same reason. Even the writers of movies and television shows had a strike for more money, I think it's time for black athletes. College football is a cash cow generating billions annually in merchandise, ticket sales, and television programming. So if the black college athletes (and other races who can participate white, asian, etc.) decide to hit the NCAA where it hurts, there pockets, they could really see some immediate change in the game around them.
A big reason that this hasn't happened already is that the players are fed the idea that they're all going to play in the NFL and be rich and get groupies so why jeopardize all that for anyone. They also are told that the university gave them a scholarship to do one thing and that is play football, so if you decide to do anything else you'll be dealt with. This is all true, but anything worth having is also worth a big risk. I guess that easy for me to say since the closest I get to college football is on XBOX....but hey, i'm just saying.

P.S. to all my ladies out there that go to my school and are groupies for the football team let them read this while you're cleaning they're underwear (yall know Im just playin)but seriously let them read it.

My boss calls this guy a Nigger (in front of me)

He called him a nigger with an ER...and I didnt slap him, Malcom X would be ashamed.

I told you before that I work at the mall but I didn’t tell you where because you don’t need to know. I will tell you I work a dead-end job selling shoes to bratty little girls and fat people who think the shoes will make them more fit (lucky for me I’m in college). I don’t hate my job, honestly I’m lucky to be employed in this global recession, I just get really bored and I’ve realized that retail is not for me. I’ve been working there such a short time I haven’t even got a paycheck yet but I’ve been looking for a reason to quit. Well I went into work yesterday and they messed up and gave a nigga a reason to quit. Wait did I just say nigga? You’re gonna like this story…

I come into work Thursday morning at 8 to help put away the shipment and I find out that the manager that usually does it with me isn’t coming in and I’m working with (for the sake of privacy lets call him Gill). Gill is a 25 year old gay white guy who makes Ryan Seacrest look like Arnold Schwarzenegger. He is always complaining about something or confronting you with his sarcastic attitude. It took some getting used to at first, but after a while I was cool with his personality because I'm a people-person and I naturally get along with almost everyone (but seriously I do). I'm not homophobic at all, in fact I have gay friends, so don't think for one second that this blog is anti-gay or something (I do hate the musical RENT tho). Anyway, Gill doesn't do shipment often so he's a little confused on how the process works even though its extremely simple. Basically a trucker drops off some boxes to us and we give him a paper to sign...thats it. Well the trucker, who was on a tight schedule, did his job and delivered the boxes to us and was waiting for Gill to make sure we had the right amount and sign off on the paper. Gill counts the boxes three times and gets a number of 26 but there is supposed to be 28. I count the boxes and get 29, and then we count them again together and finally get 28. The trucker is pisssed at this point because he has places to go, and usually it doesn't take the other manager this long to count some boxes. So the trucker, who is a Bill Cosby looking black guy in his late 40's, asks Gill "Did you even know there was 28 boxes?" Gill who I'm sure had no clue how many boxes there were said in a sarcastic voice "I knew there was either 26 or 28." The trucker signs the paper and then leaves.

The door shuts. "Fucking NIGGER Bitch" said Gill. That's right, Gill a 145pound gay white guy called this trucker a nigger as soon as he walked out the door. At the time, I wasn't sure if I had heard him correctly because you don't expect to hear people just say nigger that boldly right in-front of you. I couldn't believe it, my heart sank. Did my boss just call a random guy who wasn't even acting like a nigger, a nigger? I could understand if a black guy came in the store robbed the register and then ran out with all the money...that's definitely a situation where I would understand if a white guy said nigger (see I'm a reasonable guy). But if someone is just doing their job, and they confront you when your not doing yours don't call them a nigger, especially not in front of a black person. So I was faced with some options A) kick this dudes butt and make him pay for what he said B) ask him about it C) go get the trucker and have him kick his butt.

Since I'm broke and the other options would cause your boy porterpotty to loose his job (and possibly get arrested) I choose B, ask him about it. So I did. About 10 seconds after he said it, I asked him "did you just call that guy a nigger?" "No" Gill said. "I don't know if you knew but I'm gay and I know how it feels to be discriminated against so I would never do that to another person," said Gill. You see Gil was mistaken. He confused discrimination with racism. Discrimination is the denial of an opportunity to an individual because of race, age, sex, or sexual orientation. But Gill was just being racist. I told him that just because your gay and you prefer a carrot to a hot dog bun (didnt actually say that analogy) doesn't mean you can't be racist against black people. I told him there a gay who hate other gays because they act to flamboyant, there are blacks who hate other black because they act too "ghetto" and there are whites who despise other whites because they think they're white trash. So just because your gay doesn't make you not a racist, that was the dumbest excuse for saying nigger I ever heard. I should have slapped him for that comment but I didn't. Then he responded with this old cliche talk about how he just bought a Nas album and rap music and BET make the word so popular that you have to say it to get it out of your system. That's wack. First of all, I know this guy doesn't listen to rap at all. He listens to Celine Dion non-stop, he even told me before that he spent his rent money on first row seats to her show. And you want me to believe rap is why you said nigger?

What If this situation was the opposite. What if a feminine-acting male customer comes in the store and drops his ice-cream on the floor then doesn't clean it up, and switches his way on out the door. What if I get pissed, go in the back room and say "uhh that faggot was so annoying." I'll tell you what would happen. I would've been fired labeled a homophobic and it would cause all these problems. And If I did say that I would be completely wrong and would deserve every bit of punishment that came my way. It's for that reason that I was very careful about what I said around Gill, making sure I didn't offend him out of respect. Apparently he couldn't go out of his way enough just to make sure he didn't say nigger when I'm in the room. Needless to say th rest of my shift was very awkward because I didn't wanna look at this guy at all. However, he started being so nice to me, giving me breaks at random times and basically doing my job. But did he think I was stupid and couldn't see that obviously he's tryna make sure I don't call Jesse Jackson? Haha too late..

Why white girls run from me late at night..

I'm back again and I have to get something off my chest..

I'm a black guy. As far as stereotypes go for black guys, I fit a few but I'm not your typical 'Boyz in the Hood' type of negro. Ok, I like fried chicken (and watermelon but who doesn't?). I like rap music and I used to wear Fubu and Rocawear when it was cool. However on the gangster scale I'm probably like a 4.5 out of 10 and I'm proud of it. I never had dreds or cornrows (thats a whole other blog in itself). I've never been to jail, unless you count timeout at christian camp, and I've spent more time at bible study than on the block hustlin'. I don't beat girls, unless it's in a pillow fight, and the only tattoo I ever had I won from Chuck E. Cheesse because I had 20 tickets (happy belated birthday stew).

Why are people (white and asian girls) so scared of me at night?
I feel like Shrek when he met donkey...

I was walking to my car after work at around 9:30p.m. and I see a white girl about 20ft ahead of me walking in the same direction in the parking lot. I work at the mall and at 9:30 on a friday night at Annapolis Mall the parking lot is pretty well lit. So I wasn't really worried about getting robbed, raped or a combination of the two; but apparently she was. After about six seconds she realizes I'm walking in the same direction as her and she starts to noticeably change her pace. I'm still not far behind her and I guess she realizes this, so her brisk walk quickly turns into an all out dash to her car. She runs to the car door, opens it as fast as she can, and starts locking all the doors (her whip was a lil ghetto, she ain't have automatic locks).

At this point I'm right in front of her car and I can see her heart is beating harder than a drum in Africa because she thinks I walked all this way to rob her broke self. I smile and then unlock the door to my car which is right next to hers; she feels pretty dumb when she realizes that I was parked right next to her. While she sits in the car trying to calm her breathing,, I put the key in the ignition and drive away.

I don't think this girl was racist. She just saw a black guy at night and her instinct's told her to...run. Can I blame her for trying to do what she thought was best to survive? No. 'Cause honestly when I see a group of black guys I get a little worried myself (mom should've enrolled me in that Karate class). So who is to blame here? Well we can start with the media. Thier exhaustive coverage on the country's 'war on crime' completely warps the nation's view of black men in America. I know, I know we have a black president with black kids and a black wife. However, that dosen't erase the fact that the only movies released by major production companies overwhelmingly feature black guys as criminals. It dosen't change the fact that police brutality is on the rise in heavily populated urban areas and it's going unpunished. As a black man I have a better chance of going to jail for 4 years than going to college for 4 years. So when more police forces are implemented I start to feel unsafe. Not because I have anything to hide or any crimes that I want to keep from police, but because of the vigilante justice that seems ever so popular with the nation's police forces today. Don't believe me? Just ask Ronnie White or Trey Joyner what I mean. Oh wait, you can't because the Prince George's County police killed them already.
I don't mean to go on a rant or anything like that but when the girl ran from me it just got me thinking. If your that girl who ran from me and your reading this right now, maybe we can do lunch- I know a great sushi place.

Hip-Hop or Boob rock? My beef with Drake's new video

This is my first blog, so if this is a completely absurd topic to write about, chalk it up to me being a blogging beginner. However when something's on my mind, its on my mind and I have to let the people know.

Drake "drizzy" Rodgers also known as Jimmy (with no shape-up) from the Tv show degrassi happens to be a phenomenal rapper. His metaphors are well thought out, descriptive, easy to understand, and they keep coming; the perfect formula for an all-star in today's hip-hop game. He can sing, that's always a plus, and he has the potential to slide into Chris Brown's spot as the "loveable light-skinned guy." He's already dating Chris's girl why not take his fame too? He has endorsements from everybody in rap including Lil Wayne, and Kanye West so obviously no one is brave enough to beef with him yet. He doesn't even have an album out yet and my Grandma (sweetest lady ever) is begging me to download his mixtape for her. Basically this guy has everything going for him...What could he do wrong? Shoot a wack video..and that's exactly what he did.
Rap videos are usually filled with so many busty, half-naked girls that Perez Hilton could get a boner watching one. In fact, Rap videos have been the scapegoat for the moral deterioration of America since Luke and 2Live Crew. But I expected something different from Drake. With all his talent in singing, acting, and rapping in combination with his background with the TV industry I thought he would put together a hot video with "Best I Ever Had." Instead we get a mediocre over-sexualized video that has literally NOTHING to do with the song. Don't get me wrong, I love seeing sexy girls jump up and down in outfits that make thongs look like sweatpants. But I also like seeing artists break down the barriers of their hip-hop forefathers. Here are some reasons why he should've done another video...
1) Parents buy music for kids: Drake had the opportunity of being a favorite of parents with his witty style and less than gangster look.Kind of like Kanye West was when he came out with "Jesus Walks." When parents see this video their going to think this guy is a nympho.

2) He was in the song "every girl": The chorus of this song goes "I just want to Fuck every girl in the world." This song is hot but the concept is soo middle school. In a time when more black people have AIDS than college degrees I think we can do without a song that says "I exchange V cards with the retards" (that's an actual lyric from the song).

3)Kanye West Produced and Shot it: That's right. Yeezy himself produced and constructed this video. So maybe I should be blaming Mr.West for this video. You can tell he was behind it from the double D's on all the chicks to Drake's College Dropout esque wardrobe. My biggest beef with Kanye in this project is that he tried to hard making this video which made the end result seem like he didn't try at all.

"That's what happens when you spitting whats inside you/but slip up and shoot the wrong fucking video and they think they can market you however they decide to" -Drake, Say What's Real

The above lyric from Drake in his freestyle "Say What's Real" was about his video "Replacement Girl" with Trey Songz (youtube it). He was done filming Degrassi and he put all of his money into putting this song together and making this video which debuted on BET's 106 & Park and was never seen again. He was basically broke after he paid for the video and he was hoping to get his big break in music but it never happened until now. He swore he wouldn't make another dumb video that affected the public's perception of him. haha Liar. Fool me once shame on you, Fool me twice shame on Drake.

Wacth the Video "Best I Ever Had" by Drake here!
